Who we are
Hope4Havering is a collective of local churches, businesses and individuals who are united by a shared vision for our community: to see all forms of homelessness made history in Havering. Bold, we know. Yet we believe that with big faith, innovative strategy and open-handed partnerships we can make a huge difference to the lives of those who need it most.
The Need – Some scary stats
In 2014 over 6400 people slept rough in London and 400,000 people were considered ‘hidden homeless’ nationally (i.e. sofa surfing and squatting). Like all boroughs in London, Havering has its share of the problem. In 2014 we had 221 referrals to our homeless services, an increase from 133 in 2012. Many of these had spent time sleeping in the streets, graveyards and parkland before accessing our NightShelter.
Being homeless is always about more than just having nowhere to live.
We’ve worked with hundreds of homeless men and women in Havering over the years and our
experience has taught us that a “one size fits all” approach to tackling the issues simply doesn’t work.
The puzzle is this: the circumstances of each persons homelessness are complex and often cyclical which can make it a challenge untangling the causes from the effects. If a person fails to get to the bottom of why they’re homeless the first time, it’s very likely they’ll become homeless again.
Our Creative Solutions
Tricky puzzles require creative solutions. That’s why we’ve shaped our strategy to accurately assess and address the points of need holistically and at different levels. The idea that underpins our approach in everything we do is that our homeless service users (we call them ‘guests’) should feel safe enough to be themselves and inspired enough to want to grow.
